Instructor for hip and knee replacement | DDr. Kasparek Specialist & Trainer
Interview with Priv.-Doz. DDr. Maximilian Kasparek, MSc “Modern medicine needs modern transfer”
Mr. Dozent Kasparek, you are not only a specialist in hip and knee replacements, but also a dedicated trainer. What motivates you to pass on your knowledge?
I see it as my responsibility to offer my patients medicine that is up to date with the latest scientific findings – and to actively pass on this knowledge. My habilitation thesis was already entitled
You are a trainer for robot-assisted knee surgery. What exactly do you teach in these trainings?
I lead OP trainings, hands-on courses and training courses on robot-assisted implantation of knee and partial knee replacements. We work with state-of-the-art robotic systems that enable precise, patient-specific placement of the implant. This not only improves functionality, but also reduces postoperative pain and complications.
What are the specific advantages of robot-assisted surgery for patients?
The technology allows an extremely exact placement of the prosthesis. This protects the surrounding tissue, minimizes the stress – and often significantly accelerates the healing process. Especially with
You are also active as an instructor in the field of hip arthroplasty. What techniques do you teach here?
One focus is on the so-called AMIS technique – which stands for Anterior Minimally Invasive Surgery. The hip joint is accessed from the front, which largely protects muscles and tissue. For patients, this often means faster mobilization and shorter rehab time. I teach this method regularly in advanced training courses and practical trainings.
What is the short stem prosthesis all about, which you use in connection with the AMIS technique?
Short-stem prostheses are designed to preserve a particularly large amount of the body’s own bone. They adapt well to the natural shape of the femur and protect the bone tissue. In combination with the AMIS technique, this results in a very modern, gentle method – and a sustainable result for the patients.
What does modern training mean to you personally?
For me, education is not a one-way street. Of course, I pass on my knowledge – but I also learn from every course and every exchange with colleagues. This dialogue helps me to further develop my own techniques and to absorb new impulses. We improve together when we share our knowledge.
What role does the Evangelical Hospital Vienna play in your training concept?
We are among the leading orthopedic departments in Austria. Through our specialization – particularly in
A highlight of junior talent development was the Ortho-Trauma Congress in Bad Hofgastein. Can you tell us about it?
Certainly. The Ortho-Trauma Congress in Bad Hofgastein was initiated by Prim. Univ.-Doz. Dr. Thomas Müllner and myself. Our goal is to provide you with an up-to-date and high-quality overview of modern treatment strategies and innovative techniques. On the first day, the so-called Rookie Day took place, where young doctors gained practical insights into current topics in orthopedics – from meniscus operations to artificial joint replacement. Particularly impressive was a 12-ton truck that served as a mobile operating lab. In it, participants could practice on tissue specimens under realistic conditions – for example, knee arthroscopies.
Were there also practical training sessions on robot-assisted surgery?
Yes, absolutely. In interactive workshops, young colleagues were able to practice, among other things, the implantation of artificial knee joints with robot assistance – as well as the professional cementing of implants. The combination of theory, practice, and technology was truly unique.
What advice would you give to young doctors who are interested in the field of endoprosthetics?
Stay curious. Learn from those with experience – but also have the courage to ask questions and explore new paths. Medicine is a constantly evolving field, and we all benefit when we are open to innovation.
